Scarborough's Aging Electrical Infrastructure

Scarborough's housing stock tells the story of post-war Toronto. The bulk of the residential neighbourhoods were built between 1950 and 1970 — a boom period that produced tens of thousands of single-family bungalows, many of which are still standing today. These homes are well-built and durable, but their original electrical systems were never designed for modern life.

Many Scarborough homes still have original 60-amp fuse panels. A 60-amp service was adequate in the 1950s — when a household's major electrical loads were a fridge, a stove, and a few light fixtures. Today, that same panel is being asked to power flat-screen TVs, multiple computers, large appliances, electric vehicle chargers, and central air conditioning. It simply can't keep up.

Panel upgrades are the most common service we provide in Scarborough. We upgrade homes from 60A or 100A service to 200A, pulling the required ESA permit, coordinating with Toronto Hydro for the service cutoff, and getting the ESA inspection done efficiently. Most Scarborough homeowners report that their insurance company specifically required the upgrade before renewing their policy — and we make that process as simple as possible.

Knob-and-tube wiring is another common issue in Scarborough's oldest homes. This wiring system — used before the 1950s — lacks a ground wire and is not compatible with modern electrical loads.
